A Singapore health guide by Dr Bina Kurup, a Singapore doctor is out in major bookstores. This health guide book is specially written for the laymen in Singapore. “Really Doc?!: Medical Myths, Facts and Tips aims to educate Singaporeans about common health misconceptions, signs and symptoms.
Do you know? “Is heatiness the cause of my frequent sore throats, ulcers or ‘bak-chiam’ (styes)?”
“Can being caught in the rain really cause headaches, joint pains or the cold?”
“Can too much sugar cause diabetes? Isn’t high blood pressure normal when you get old?”
“Does soya sauce really darken your scars?
Are chicken and seafood ‘tok’ (‘poison’) and bad for wound healing?”
This is a very practical health guide because there is a medical myth, condition, illness or symptom inside the book that each and everyone would have suffered at some point in time. This book also stands out from all medical guides because she has included common hokkien (a local dialect in Singapore) medical terms like ‘leng’ (cold in hokkien), ‘tok’ (poison), ‘hong sik’ (rheumatism) ‘juak ‘ (heaty ) etc . to explain medical conditions that many Singaporeans can understand.
The book is written in a clear and concised manner. The common health conditions are divided into acute, chronic and general problems. Acute conditions are generally those that are shortterm ailments, though some may be recurrent or be prolonged. For ease of discussion, they are grouped into three sections viz. Common Infections, Common Aches and Pains and First Aid Myths and Misconceptions. Chronic conditions are the long standing medical problems that require long-term follow up and care.
Also included are some of the commonest conditions, all of which have a significant impact on health and wellbeing. These include Hypertension, Diabetes and Asthma. Epilepsy is included, as not only is it common enough, but it is also amongst one of the frequently misunderstood conditions. Under the General section, this health guide covers some common misconceptions about Drugs in general and specific drug groups like antibiotics, steroids and supplements.
WIth 20 years as a family physician and she sought to correct the misconceptions and also provided tips for patient self care. She has decided to compile the commonly encountered misconceptions together with the correct information and also have provided tips for patient self care. This health guide is truly a labour of love.
Congratulations to Dr Bina for the launch of her book and we thank her for appointing Rank Books as her publishing consultant and book distributor for her new book. We are confident that this book will become a bestseller because this is a highly practical health guide that every Singaporean family must have. It has been our pleasure to work with an outstanding doctor like Dr Bina Kurup.
The book is now available at all major bookstores in Singapore. Get it now at Popular Book Co, Times Bookshop, MPH Bookstores, Harris and Kinokuniya Bookstores. The book is priced at $23.00 (before GST).

We wish to congratulate our client, Mr Eric Alagan for launching his second novel titled Code Shield at the Singapore Writers Festival 2011. Mr Eric Alagan is also the author of three business books – “Staff Selection”, “Increase F&B Sales”, “Property Valuation” and the novel – “Beck and Call”. Rank Books is honored to be the publishing consultant for all five books written Mr Eric Alagan.
Eric Alagan is a rare talent when comes to book writing because he excels in both non-fiction and fiction genres. His non-fiction book, ‘Property Valuation” was on the Straits Times Bestseller List for 8 weeks. His latest novel, Code Shield has received very positive feedback. An Australian literary agent and manuscript assessor, Brian Cook described the book as “…an intriguing mix of drug-running…human trafficking, the flesh trade, political maneuvering and high-stakes power games, flavored with interesting characters and locations, and spiced with dangerous liaisons, secret deals and double crosses, and the sometimes deadly internecine jostling of international security agencies. Architecturally, Code Shield is superb…”.
Indeed, this is a superb book that has all the ingredients needed to make a blockbuster movie. Any aspiring Singapore movie director out there who is searching for that perfect script to make a James Bond kind of movie, must grab this gem. This is one book waiting to be transformed from book to movie. Here is a chance for a local movie director in Singapore to make it in Hollywood!
The book launched held at the Singapore Writers Festival 2011 was well attended by friends, writers and business associates. The Guest of Honour was Mr. K. Kesavapany, Director, Institute of South East Asian Studies and Ambassador to Jordan. Mr. Ramachandran, Director, from the National Book Development Council of Singapore was also a guest speaker at the launch.
Congratulations to Eric Alagan for his outstanding achievements!
Eric Alagan’s books are available for sale at all major bookstores in Singapore, at his website www.lcabooks.com and at www.rankseminar.com.

BOOK DESCRIPTIONS
1] HUMOUR, WIT AND FUNNEEEEEE IDEAS a kind of humour for those with some grey matter (with caricatures drawn by the author’s funneeeeee, shaky right hand) [Price: $14.90]
Description:
This laughable book of humour is the handiwork of a strange clown of startling brain cells which seem to have a funneeeeee life of their own, a funneeeeee guy who is apparently gifted with grey matter – grey hair, grey shirt, grey pants, grey socks and possibly grey underpants (unable to see the colour of his underpants), claiming grey to be his lucky colour. This fellow had also tried to be what he is not, i.e., acted, a cartoonist, and had drawn the funneeeeee sketches for this book with his trembling right hand as though he had seen a ghost. He also became one of his own cartoon characters under his shaky penmamship. The funneeeeee, cute author had wanted to be a comedian, an actor who makes people laugh, but was unable to realise this ambition. Now, he will “act” in this book and make people laugh. This book will definitely make everyone laugh. If the humour is good everyone will laugh at the humour. If the humour is bad everyone will laugh at the author, who we understand will blush. In any case, everyone will laugh. Reading this funneeeeee book should be the easiest and most fun way to strengthen and expand the grey matter. This book attempts to make fun of everything. Even the author himself is not spared. This book ambitiously aims at presenting serious ideas on many aspects of life, e.g., philosophy, politics and science, etc., to readers in a non-serious, yet stimulating, style. It also aims at creating fun and bringing sunshine into the dull, humdrum lives of readers. It should relax our dear readers, improve our dear readers’ moods and help sharpen our dear readers’ minds, fortifying their mental fitness for meeting whatever challenges that lie ahead of them in the process. Importantly, as the title of this book implies, those who possess a copy of this book prove that they have grey matter, not forgetting that this book aims also at expanding the grey matter – this is no joke. Furthermore, as the book is greyish, possessing a copy of the book is possessing grey matter. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Those who do not possess the book do not possess this grey matter. Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee! Prove you have grey matter! Get this grey book! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
2] BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION MADE EASY AND PRACTICAL Quick Revision Notes And Selected Management Articles For Management Excellence, With Important Practical Management Tips [Price: $19.90]
Description:
This important book provides a wide range of management ideas for both the practitioners and students. It practically covers the whole range of management functions, from the “soft” aspects to the “hard” aspects. The author also shares some of his expertise with the reader. In its own way it is a unique business management book. Business people and practitioners and industrial managers or engineers should find the book of great practical interest as a reference text as it covers such important practical subjects as production management, risk management, finance and banking, personnel management, marketing management, accounting, automation, leadership techniques, public relations, industrial relations, work study, motivational techniques, productivity and management controls. Business management students should find the book useful for quick revision. In fact, this is a very ambitious business management book. To add more practical interest to the book, selected, stimulating articles, some of which had been published in journals in the past, are included. Readers who take the principles and techniques presented in the book to heart should be better managers, motivators and leaders.
3] THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR ORGANISATIONS With Important Tips On Managing People [Price: $21.90]
Description:
In administering an office and people, we should be concerned about things such as the layout of the office, the equipment in the office, comfort of the people using the office and the efficiency of the work systems. This book provides plenty of practicable ideas for the aspiring administrative manager to tap on and he would be able to benefit much from these ideas when implementing them. Students sitting for the various management exams should also be able to benefit from the book. Having good concepts of administrative management is fine but being a good people management practitioner is something else. However, the very important job of managing people is a seemingly easy one which relatively few excel in. In the book are also some important tips on managing people.
4] TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT IN A MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT With Important Tips On Practical Management [Price: $19.90]
Description:
Managing technical people seems to be another kind of “ball-game”. Many technical people are proud of their expertise and would not like to be always told what to do, as though they do not know their stuffs. Moreover, technical knowledge is advancing so fast that the current technical knowledge could become obsolete within a short time. This book provides many important ideas for the aspiring technical manager. Much of the knowledge presented in the book is not available in textbooks and could only be gained by being on the job. To manage and solve technical problems in an industrial or factory environment, book knowledge or theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient, and, practical knowledge or experience is just as important, if not more important. As a matter of fact, some things cannot be learnt from books but must be “experienced” first-hand. This kind of knowledge is of great importance to the practising engineer or technical manager. In this book the author shares this kind of knowledge which he has gained first-hand by being “on-the-job” with the reader, knowledge which is unlikely to be found in a normal technical management book. Students of management should benefit from the book too.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The author, Bertrand Wong, has published 14 professional and general books, with two professional books having been adopted as reference texts and commended by professional bodies, edited one book of essays and published many important research articles in international mathematics, physics and economics journals. He has about ten professional and general manuscripts still waiting for publishing contracts. He has been teaching many professional, management and academic subjects and has been in management for many years. He has also been a faculty member of an American research university.

Mortgage and Grow Rich by Alfred Chia, CEO of SingCapital Pte Ltd was launched on 8th June 2011 at HDB Hub Auditorium. It was attended by more than 500 guests from the real estate and financial industry.

As the publishing consultant for this book, it is my honor to attend and I congratulate Alfred Chia for this spectacular launch. The program kicked off with Alfred speaking about his book and the pain and pleasure of putting the book together based on his years of experience in loan financing as a financial consultant. When comes to mortgage planning, Alfred is the Guru! His book, Mortgage and Grow Rich is a testimony to it. Alfred Chia is the first author to write a book on mortgage planning, a subject that is unfamiliar to many and one that it often reserved for bankers and financial advisers to explain to their clients. Alfred Chia has made a complex subject interesting and easy-to-understand for any lay man. Also worth mentioning is that there are comics inserted in every other page of the book to illustrate key concepts to the readers.

In this book, Alfred is telling us that, we must learn about mortgage planning and loan financing if you want to be financially free. This is an area of knowledge that is critical if you want to be rich. How do the rich gets rich fast? They use OPM – Others People’s Money! They use loans for their business expansion, they use loans to finance their property purchases! They use loans to make more money! So, if you aspire to be rich, can you ignore learning about loan financing? Every one of us will own a property one day, every one of us will take a loan to finance our home, but why are we not taught about mortgage planning in our school?

In Mortgage and Grow Rich, you will be enlightened to the fact that there is such a thing called a Good Debt and A Bad Debt. It is not wrong to take a loan, paying everything in cash may not be the best! The Rich uses loans as a leverage to get richer! Get the knowledge on mortgages if you want to be rich investing in property, this is one area you must have!
The program of the day also included two other prominent speakers in the real estate industry, Mr Ismail Gafoor, CEO of PropNex and Mr Rayney Wong (lawyer, investor and best-selling author) who gave tips on investing in the Singapore property market. Both speakers, not only excelled in their own professional fields but they are also successful property investors and best-selling authors. Mr Ismail Gafoor wrote the best-seller, “The Ultimate Guide to Real Estate Investment in Singapore” and Mr Rayney Wong wrote the best-seller, “Secrets of Property Millionaires”. Both books are indispensable for all new and existing property investors! Again, Rank Books and Rank Publishing are honored to be the appointed publishing consultant and book distributor for both authors.
I wish Alfred Chia every SUCCESS in his new book. I know putting a book together like this is not easy but you have done it so well! Grab a copy now at major bookstores or through Alfred Chia’s Blog at www.alfredchia.com

The daughter of Mrs Wee Kim Wee, Wee Eng Hwa has self-published a 230 recipes cookbook titled Cooking For the President. Some of the recipes included in this 544-page book are mee siam (rice vermicelli in spicy gravy) and kueh ko swee (steamed rice flour cakes flavoured with palm sugar), babi masak assam (braised pork belly with salted vegetable, mustard leaf and tamarind) and many other Peranakan dishes.
Ms Wee chosed to self-publish her cookbook because she wanted ‘complete freedom’ over the content and quality of the book. While most recipe books contained just recipes and pictures, she has included a biography of Mr and Mrs Wee and family photos as well. Also worth mentioning is that Ms Wee is also the photographer for the dishes published in the cookbook. Well done! From a publisher’s view point, the cost of producing a cookbook in full color is not just money spent on the full color prinitng but in the photography. A single shot of a dish can cost you $150 onwards if taken by a professional food photographer! So, if you have 100 dishes to shoot, the cost just add up and the bulk of the cost in cookbook production is really in the photography.
Is it easy to do your own food photography? I must say it is much easier now if you have a good digital SLR camera and armed with a few basic food styling techniques I am sure any cookbook author can do the job with the right photography training.
Rank Seminar Pte Ltd, will be running a short food photograpy course soon (in December), contact us if you are interested.
Indeed, your family’s recipes are an important part of your family history. But instead of going for the printed cookbook which is expensive to produce, why not do an ebook?
Why not combine your family photos and time-tested recipes into an E-Cookbook and gives it as a gift to your family members during special occasions. E-Cookbooks are perfect gifts for family and friends for all occasions — birthdays, weddings, Christmas and family reunions! Here are some reasons why you should consider doing your own family cookbook.
Reasons Why You Need A E-Cookbook
Family recipes are part of our heritage and legacy. Food appeals to our senses and evokes memories that we share with our family members so it is worth documenting. Secondly, the ebook allows you to make the book comes alive by adding multimedia content. You can add old family photos, video clips, sound files and hyperlinks to make the book interesting and interactive.
It Is Low Cost. To print a full color cookbook you need a print run of at least 1000 copies and this will cost you between $10,000 to $15,000 or higher (for a book not more than 200 pages and slightly bigger than an A5 size) after you have paid for food photography, design and layout, and printing. But if you do an e-book you can cut the cost down by more than 60% and you can just produce 50 or 100 copies according to your preference.
